I will be in the Ballyconnell area in early October 2017. I'm looking for suggestions on where I should go to find out more information about my Maguire & Donohoe families. Aughrim and Snugborough are areas associated with them.
I have an earlier post in this forum that details the family - family of Patrick MAGUIRE and Bridget DONOHOE. Allied families are GAFFNEY & FREEHILL.

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!
I assume your ancestors were RC. You likely know that the records for Kildallan/Tomregan RC parish start in 1867 for baptisms and 1857 for marriages which will constrain your searches if your ancestors date back to 1850 or so.
When did Patrick Maguire and Bridget Donohoe marry?
We do not have a parish liaison in northwest Co. Cavan. I will contact our HQ to see what suggestions they may have.

Hi Roger,
Thanks so much for your response. Yes, they were RC. I'm guessing that Patrick Maguire and Bridget Donohoe were married about 1825 as I have found four children for them, born between 1825 and 1841.
The following is my original post about my family:
My ancestors were Patrick MAGUIRE and Bridget DONOHOE. Patrick died at some point between 1841 and 1862. Bridget was still living in 1862.
I descend from their son, Bernard Maguire, who stated on his Royal Artillery attestation papers that he was born in 1838 in Aughrim in the parish of Tomregan. He married Emily Maiden in Kingston, Ontario in 1862. He was stationed in and had children in Canada, Malta, England, and Ireland. He settled finally in Quebec City in 1881 and died in 1901. His descendants live in various places in Quebec, Ontario and BC in Canada.
Another son, Thomas Maguire, born about 1837, went to NSW, Australia where he married Johanna Ryan. Descendants live there today.
A daughter, Bridget Maguire, born about 1841, went to NSW with her brother, Thomas (above), married Michael Clark and they then went to Wellington, New Zealand. They had one daughter who died unmarried. No descendants.
Another son, James Maguire, born about 1825, was also in the Royal Artillery. He was stationed in India and stayed there when he was pensioned out. There was no mention in his military papers if he married, and his death date and place are unknown. Any descendants are unknown.
I would like to know more about Patrick Maguire and Bridget Donohoe as well as if there were more children born to them and if there are descendants or cousins in Ireland to this day.
Allied families are GAFFNEY & FREEHILL.
Thank you so much for reading my posting.

Linda:
I checked on Roots Ireland and did not locate any baptismal records for children of Patrick Maguire and Bridget Donohoe. If they were baptized in Tomregan then the records would not be available.
The 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Tomregan civil parish shows a Patrick Maguire in Carrowmore townland. Possibly your ancestor. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cavan/tomregan.htm
Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. Currently, www.irishgenalogy.ie has death record images for 1891. We expect that the images for 1864-1890 might become available later this year. When they are available, you can search for Bridget's death record.
Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Hi Roger,
Thank you for getting back to me. I have had both my dad's Y DNA and autosomal DNA done.
With FTDNA, my dad's Y DNA is kit number 248931, haplogroup R-M269. In the Airghialla Mag Uidhir group, he's in the SOA A2 group; he's also in the Mag-Uidhir group "Airghialla 2 Mag-Uidhir" - Lugain subgroup A.
My dad's autosomal results are on Gedmatch as well - T018351.
Any matches out there?

Hi Roger,
Are there any family history societies or genealogy societies in Cavan that I could be in touch with before my visit to Ireland next week? Any libraries in the area that I should visit when I'm there?

Hi all: I'm working from a court document regarding the death of Thomas Freehill in Nevada. My great-great grandmother Catherine Freehill was his sister...Donahoe, Maquire and Freehill are some of the names...also Cassidy, Dolan, Golden, Martin, Kane, McKiernan.....he left a legacy after death to several family members in Ireland...any help on your end would be great. I'm trying to figure out Thomas and Catherine (Bridget) father...I thought it was Francis...

Katherine
To your question above, there are related threads at:
https://irelandxo.com/ireland/cavan/kildallan/message-board/mary-freehill
and
https://irelandxo.com/ireland/cavan/kildallan-cavan/message-board/charley-o.
Hope that helps.
My hypothesis (but please note, at this stage, completely unverified) is that the Francis referred above is the son of a Michael Freehill (1754-1830), who I believe that I and many others in Australia are descended from as well, through Michael's son Bernard Freehill (died 1857) who married Mary McKiernan (died 1863). As I said, it is only a theory, but it is based on two DNA matches I have at Ancestry.Com.

Hello Lindy. I saw your thread regarding the Maguire, Donohoe, Gaffney, Freehill families of Ballyconnell area. My husband Terry is descended from Thomas Maguire from Tomregan/Snugborough areas, Ballyconnell, County Cavan and Johanna Ryan County Limerick. Thomas's parents were Patrick Maguire and Bridget Donohoe. Bernard Gaffney sponsored Thomas and his sister Bridget's emigration to Australia and paid their fare. Any information you have on the families would be greatly appreciated. We are particularly trying to find out more information on Patrick Maguire and Bridget Donohoe and family. Here are the links to notices about the death of Bernard (Benjamin) Gaffney and it mentions his uncle Mr P Freehill and mother Mrs Anne Gaffney.

How nice to be in touch with another Australian Maguire cousin. From which of Thomas's children does your husband descend?
I know very little about Patrick Maguire and Briget Donohoe. I estimated that they died between 1841 and 1858 - I used the birth of their last know child (Bridget b abt 1841) and the information that their children, Thomas and Bridget, gave about their parents both being dead when they emigrated to Australia in 1858.
Have you ever found the actual connection to the Freehills and/or the Gaffneys? I know the dcuments say first cousin and second cousin but I haven't been able to conect them to the Maguires in my tree.
Has your husband done his DNA? I have, better still my father has, and we match one of the descendants of Stephen Francis Maguire.
Feel free to email me at lindamaitland@telus.net
