Bernard Carolan was born in County Meath. His parents were Patrick Carolan (1833-1909) and Mary Clerican (1846-1907). He had 4 brothers (Philip, Hugh, Michael, John and 1 sister, Mary). The family lived in Rathmore, in the Parish of Athboy. Bernard emigrated from Co. Meath to the US. Leaving from Liverpool, he arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 28,1896 aboard the S.S. Pennland, just a month before his 23rd birthday. From Philadephia, he traveled to his aunt, Jane Foynes Carolan, wife of his uncle James Carolan (1836-1890) in Chicago, Illinois where he settled for the rest of his life. He also lived briefly with his aunt Anne Carolan Dunne whose sons, James and Joseph, witnessed his naturalization in 1905. In Chicago, he worked for the city as an electric motorcar (trolley) operator. Although the name Carlin is sometimes noted in US records, Bernard retained the original spelling of Carolan.
Bernard married three times - Ann Rowan, (1880-1907) m. 1904, Chicago, IL. 1-child Eugene; Delia (Bridget) Farrelly of Co. Meath, (1877-1919) m., 1909, Chicago, IL., 6-children, Patrick, Sylvester, Philip, Michael, James Francis and Mary. Catherine Farrelly of Co.Meath, (1879-1957) m.1929, Chicago, IL. Catherine, Delia's sister took over childrearing after Delia's death. Bernard died on April 22, 1945 at 72 years, 11 months.
