Samuel Edgar, my maternal great grandfather married Rebecca McCloy at St. Columb's Cathedral in 1864.
By the time the family arrived in Canada in 1910, they were world class travellers, having left Ireland in 1885 for Sydney, Australia. Sadly, Samuel was never to return to the land of his birth as he died in Sydney in 1890. He is buried with his 24 year old daughter, Rebecca, and her three infant children in Sydney.
The remaining family returned to England, not Ireland, in all likelhood because they had sold everything and headed out originally because of the bad behaviour of their eldest son, Ralph. That has now been verified by actual newspaper articles which reported his bad behaviour from the age of "under ten years."
I should clarify that one of the family, my maternal grandfather William, returned to Ireland but to Belfast where he met and married my lovely grandmother Elizabeth Wallace. Ultimately they rejoined the rest of the Edgars in England.
Finally in 1910, the whole kit and caboodle arrived in Canada. They came here to the city of Owen Sound, Ontario. Many of the following generations moved to other locales and we are spread across the country from sea to sea. But here I remain holding down the fort, keeper of the historical beginnings of the Edgars in Canada.
Cathie Locke, daughter of Mary Edgar
In this picture: The woman seated is wife, Rebecca McCloy Edgar and the young girl is daughter, Rebecca. The tallest man on the left is Samuel Edgar and the man standing on the right is the eldest son, Ralph who was born in England. That took a long time to discover...by serendipity. The young man seated on the left, dark haired, is my grandfather, William. The young fair-haired boy seated in front is John.
