Got Irish origins in Ballylongford, County Kerry?

If so, you are in good company...

American celebrity, Sean Patrick Hayes traced his ancestors back to the parish of Kilnaughtin (Barony of Iraghticonnor) in north County Kerry.

EMIGRATION

Seán's great-grandfather, Patrick Hayes Jr. (b. 08 Apr 1879) emigrated to the USA in 1900. Settling in Chicago, Patrick Hayes Jr. worked as a street-car employee and married Jennie Carmody. They had 5 children, including William Hayes (1911-1951), Seán's grandfather.

NEAREST VILLAGE

US records show he gave Ballylongford, Co. Kerry as his place of origin. (In fact, this was his nearest village –  the less-detailed 'address' emigrants typically gave on Ships manifests and naturalisation records).

TOWNLAND OF ORIGIN

By way of a Petty Sessions Court records search for the nearby market town of Tarbert, he could discover the Hayes family home farm was in Kilcolgan Lower (and more!)

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

In 2015, Sean Hayes' search took him on a journey back to his home parish in the TV show Who Do You Think You Are (Season 6).
