Margaret O'Sullivan was born on 4 May 1855 Lisnaboy Upper near Cullen, Millstreet, Cork the eldest child of Cornelius 26 and Margaret Hickey 24. She came out to Sydney Australia with her sister Mary arriving on 1 July 1880 and was soon joined by her younger sisters Hanna, Hanora and Julia after 1882.
Margaret married Thomas Nolan on 22 November 1884 in Sydney, New South Wales and had sons Thomas, Francis, George, Sidney, William and daughter Margaret at Sydney, before moving to Rosebank (Near Murrwillumbah northern NSW). Here she had son Frederick John and last child Annie arrived in 1906.
The same year 1906 they drew a farm in a ballot near Stokers Siding Murwillumbah as the district opened up, which they called 'Cullen' after her home place in Ireland. Thomas and Margaret's marriage broke down by 1915 where Thomas, together with young Margaret, Annie, William and Fred moved to Leeton in southern NSW via Ungarie near West Wyalong. They remained very close though and were in constant contact. Margaret remained at the Stokers Siding farm with young Thomas her eldest son, Frank, George and Sidney. She died on 9 December 1938 at the age of 83.
Both George and Sidney enlisted for WW1, with George being awarded the Military Medal in May 1918 at Le Hamel France. He served from 1915-1919, including Gallipoli. Sidney was killed on 7 January 1918 at Messines Ridge in Belgium and he served from 1916-18
Recent Ancestry DNA testing has now linked the Irish and Australian family after some 142 years since Margaret and her sisters emigrated.
