  • Hello

The surname MACKLE caught my eye.

I have a Catherine MACKLE who married Daniel McANENEY. They left Armagh and immigrated to South Africa in 1860.

By 1864 they had immigrated to New Zealand. I have seen a golden wedding announcement in a NZ paper that states they

married 23 Sept 1858, Catholic Church, College Land, County Armgh, that Catherine is the only daughter of John Mackle.

Do you have Catherine in your family tree of know any thing about her.

    Thanks, Rose

  • Hello Rose,

Daniel and Catherine's great-great-great grandson here! Using the rootsireland.ie website, I searched for both of their birth records, using 1838 (Catherine's date of birth according to MyHeritage) as a reference point and the free access to Griffith's Valuation for Ireland birth record database.

For Daniel, I found a Daniel McAneny, born in Gallrock, Tartaraghan, County Armagh.

For Catherine, I found three matches- a Catherine Mackerel, of Ballyneddan, Kilbroney, County Down, a Catherine Mackel of Ballyrogully, Artrea, County Derry, and a Catherine Mackle of Moyglass, Kilglass, County Roscommon. The 'birth and baptism records' section has one more record- four records- behind a paywall.

MyHeritage lists Catherine's lifespan as 1838-1922. It amazes me to think of her life- growing up in famine-ravaged Ireland, starting a new life in South Africa and then New Zealand, living through the Industrial Revolution and the First World War and being mother to nine children!

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi RC

Great to receive a reply from my request. Which side of Daniel and Catherine do you descend?

My line is from Daniel McAneney and I am his great great grand daughter and live in NZ.

Daniel and Catherine arrived in New Zealand in 1864 with two children, Thomas and Annabella, who I believe were born in South Africa.

After their arrival in NZ they had another 9 children, although two girls died between the ages of 4 and 5.

In my seach I have come across several Daniel McAneney' s and several Catherine's and as yet not sure who is who.

    Would love to maintain contact.

    Thanks Rose

  • Hi Rose,

I am a descendant of Daniel and Catherine's son James, born circa 1879, and I live in Auckland.

I have also encountered the same issue of several people bearing their names or alternate spellings of them. The website Geni has profiles for Daniel (1836-1909) and Catherine (1838-1922), and lists Daniel's parents but not Catherine's, as well as some other relatives. Daniel's parents are listed as John (born 1814) and Mary Jane (born 1813) McAneney. The website https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/list/cotyroneireland.rootsweb.com/thread/275105/ also features them, where Leo Swindley says the Collegeland chapel where they married 'would have been just a short stroll from the Mackle/ Mackell home.'

    Kind regards,

    R.C.

  • Hi Rose and RC.

I’m very late to this conversation, but used to live in Collegeland. It’s not a town or townland, more a general name for an area a couple of miles from the village of Charlemont, Co Armagh, heading (east or southeast) towards Portadown.

It’s in Loughall parish, Co Armagh, and my suggestion is that you look up the parish registers for Loughall parish, you’ll find this on the website Catholic Parish Registers at the National Library of Ireland and follow the links https://registers.nli.ie

The Loughall parish registers don’t cover all years, and some entries are almost illegible - don’t let this put you off. Start at the beginning and scroll through - you’ll find entries for Mackle (variant spellings in the earliest records) and hopefully other surnames you’re interested in. Look among the names of baptismal sponsors and marriage witnesses as well, as these are very often immediate family of those directly involved.

Among these records is a baptismal record for a Rose Mackle, February 1837, daughter of John Mackle and Mary Conly. It’s possible that she was a sister, who did not survive, to your Catherine.
There are still Mackle’s in Collegeland, they are descended from another Mackle, Peter Mackle and Mary Ann Kerr in the same registers
