O’DONNELL James. James born c1838. to Hugh O’Donnell and Margaret Early and who reportedly lived near Loch Allen Co Leitrim
James left Co Leitrim at the age of 22 prior to April 1857 and boarded the “Alfred” which arrived in Sydney 21st September 1857.
James travelled with his sister Anne. Hugh and Margaret had died prior to their departure for Australia.
My brother Gregory O’Donnell met two Early brothers some years back. They apparently continued to lived in the same area as did Hugh and Margaret.
James and Ann met up with their brother Michael in Hunters Hill, Sydney. Michael had left Ireland earlier and two other brothers may have followed James.(This information needs to be confirmed)
An article in the Sydney Morning Herald 31st August 1998 makes a brief remark on Ann’s arrival in Sydney
James married Margaret Heffernan in St Mary Cathedral, Sydney in 1862. James and Mary had seven children, Margaret Jane, Thomas France, Annie, Mary Ellen, James, Joseph, Walter John and Edward. All were born in Hunters Hill Sydney.
James died in 1916 and is buried in the Field of Mars, Hunters Hill along with his siblings Michael and Anne together with members of their respective families. There are now four generations of the family at rest in the Field of Mars
