Anna Barrett was from County Roscommon and was born circa August 1830. The names of her parents are currently unknown.

She married James Stewart, Steward of Mote Park, and may have been employed at Mote Park previous to this.

They had four children: James W. Stewart (1823-1920), John Augustine Stewart (1854-1913), Charles R. Stewart (1855-1913), and William Scott Stewart (1860-1947). The only baptismal record found to date is for William, recorded at Elphin, Killian on 9 May 1860. (The single sponsor was Anna Naughton.)

After the death of James Stewart in September 1865, Anna and the children emigrated to the U.S. and lived in Burlington City, New Jersey. Family tradition had it that a brother, named Carey, had preceded her to the U.S., settling in Moorestown, New Jersey, but no documentation has been found.

Anna died on 12 February 1913. The search for Anna is complicated by the fact that William's baptismal entry states "spurious," and that James Stewart's civil death record stated that he was a bachelor, "not previously married." Family tradition also has it that James Stewart's family was not favorably disposed toward Anna, and that this was a reason for her emigration.

  • Thanks--I had seen this record previously from Find My Past, but had not realized the import. I had previously gone through two of the microfilms of Ballygar Parish (Book 1 1804-1861 and Book 2 (1844-1859) and noted all the families I could find that were connected to the Barretts. I listed these on a spreadsheet. I have just attempted to upload a screen shot of these connections to Anna's record, which shows Barrett connections to Crehens/Crains, Gavins, Naughtens, and others. The Book number and image frame number is in the right-hand column.
