The Sisters of Mercy came to Tulla in 1883 and the convent housed them for many years where they made a huge contribution to the education of the parish and particularly to the girls. At one time, the convent housed over 20 religious sisters who trained and educated a number of girls who entered religious life and have served all over the world. The present day building was donated by the Head Order in 2011 to Ceoltas Ceoltoiri Eireann to be used as a Cultural Centre and for the benefit of the greater community in keeping with the Mercy tradition. It is presently being renovated for Comhaltas purposes and houses traditional music and language classes for the local area.
