Catherine McAteer (b. January 6, 1868, confirmed by baptismal records on Roots Ireland)

Based on research, my Great Grandmother, Catherine McAteer, was born in Fanad in Co.Donegal

Her parents were Charles McAteer and Catherine Gibbons, from a Townland called Ballycallan (near Portsalon) in the Parish of Clondavaddog.

Charles McAteer died in 1870, whereupon Catherine Gibbons re-married to a Robert Morning from Ballynashannagh. She is buried in the Morning plot at Massmount Cemetery.

They had multiple children throughout their time together in Ballynashannagh.

My Great-Grandmother Catherine McAteer, emigrated to the USA in or around 1888. She married Roger Daly, formerly of Abbeyside, County Waterford, in 1893 in Philadelphia, PA. (Another story - Roger is a son of Patrick Daly and Kate Ryan, confirmed by DNA).

They had a son they called Charles Daly, and, unfortunately, his birth happened to be only three months before Roger Daly passed away in 1895 of typhoid at the young age of 25.

Charles Daly was my Grandfather.

Catherine Daly (nee McAteer) got re-married in 1899 to Charles McGinn, from Co.Tyrone, and they had multiple children throughout their life together.

So that is how I come to have McAteers, Mornings, and Gibbons from Donegal, Dalys and Ryans from Waterford and McGinns from Tyrone, as part of my extended family.

Chuck Daly, at home in Philadelphia USA.

  • Hi Chuck, my great-great grandfather was Charles McAteer, McIntyre in the US. He was born around 1849 in Fanad. On his death certificate from 1912, his parents are listed as Charles McIntyre & Catherine McIntyre. I know they were cousins to McAteer’s in Ballynabrocky, Fanad. Charles came to the US c. 1870, settled in Chester, PA., outside Philadelphia. The witness at his marriage was a William Gibbons. Charles moved to South Philadelphia c. 1896. Family lore states an Edward McIntyre (McAteer) was a first cousin & lived West Philly. Not sure if there is any connection, but many of the names & places are the same. Michael

  • Hello! Certainly a possibility of a relation. There are so many McAteers/McIntyres and Gibbons in Fanad, but I bet they are all related. Chuck
