Although I have no proof, I am assuming that her mother Mary Gleeson was from Bruree. Her father William Costello was a resident of Ballagran at the time of his marriage. William and Michael Costello Jr., who were perhaps brothers, leased property together in both Ballyagran and Ballingarry. I believe the Costello couple then resided in Ballingarry, given that no baptisms have been found for their children in Bruree and baptisms are not extant for Ballingarry from 1828-1850.
The widowed Mary Costello and teen daughters Johanna and Catherine emigrated to Norwich Connecticut USA in 1856, accompanied by Michael Costello, age 14, probably her nephew., son of Michael. The family lived in 1860 (U.S. census, Norwich Connecticut) adjacent to widowed Mary Collins and her son and two adult daughters. The Collins were from Ballingarry.
There were other Gleesons who emigrated about the same time to Norwich, Connecticut, one being Catherine Gleeson who married in Norwich Timothy Quinlan in 1855. Most of the Quinlans who came to Norwich were from Ardpatrick. Catherine's tombstone dated Dec. 1, 1868 (age 35) provides her place of birth as "the parish of Bruree."
Jeremiah Gleeson married in Norwich in 1861 to Mary Enright. His parents were Edmund, of Bruree and Catherine Joyce of Bruff, married in Bruff 27 April 1825. Jeremiah was born in Bruree in 1830.
John Gleeson married Honora Nugent in Bruree on 27 March 1843. Son John was baptized 19 March 1844; son Patrick was baptized 6 Sept 1846. Both emigrated to Norwich.

I came upon this while looking into my relative also named Johanna Costello from Limerick. The Johanna I am looking in to was born in 1831, the daughter of Nicholas Costello and Mary Cronin. She married David Lynch in Ireland and at some point immigrated to Ohio. I am new to this and am now at a standstill. Please disregard if this isn't appropriate, I am hoping maybe you know something that can help?

Thanks for your question. I tried checking rootsireland.ie (to which I have a subscription) for the baptism of Johanna and marriage of her parents, but without success. What this may mean is that these events happened in places that do not have RC records that survive from 1831 or so. I also tried Griffiths Valuation, a land tax survey from 1852 in Limerick which listed a Nicholas Costello in the parish of Doon and another in the parish of St.John's in Limerick City. The land records of Doon over a larger area than the RC parish of the same name! Within that land record area is also part of the RC parish of Cappamore - whose records do not go back to 1831.I also consulted the Tithe Applotment from about 1827-30. It had a John Costello in Doon, but no Costello in St' John's probably because few urban properties were taxed for the tithes.
It is possible that the John Costello was a relative of Nicholas.- his father perhaps?.The properties mentioned were in towns and the name Nicholas was seldom used at that time by poor farmers. The Nicholas in Limerick City in 1852 may have been too old to have fathered Johanna in 1831 but may be a son of the same name. RC records in the city parishes do go back into the 1700s. The above are only possibilities based on the infomation you have.
Those were all the immediate sources I thought of. Have you looked for any clues in Ohio for their Irish origin - marriage, death records, affiliations, tombstones - which could suggest a place in Limerick to focus on? I did not find a marriage of a David Lynch to Johanna Costello, either. Sorry this is confusing but Irish searching can have a steep learning curve. Check Johngrenham.com. Most of the info is free and he shows and lists the maps and record time periods.
Keep looking for sources both in the U.S. and in Ireland that might help you narrow down where in Limerick they were from. Good luck!
