Catherine aka Kitty Quinn was born, the second of five children, at Carrigeen, St John's Well, Kilkenny 15th June 1843 to parents Thomas Quinn and Judy nee Carrigan. She arrived in NSW, Australia aboard the "Nile" at the Port of Newcastle on 15th May 1861. She had been sponsored by her uncle, Patrick Quinn who had arrived there in 1854. She was described as a Domestic Servant. Oral history tells us that the family raised horses in Kilkenny and Kitty was indeed a fine horsewoman herself. She would ride sidesaddle. In 1872 Kitty married Englishman, William J Gawthorn in the Catholic Church in Bourke, NSW. They had five children before William died in 1884. Their youngest son MIchael Thomas Gawthorn was my grandfather. Kitty spent the remainder of her life, after being widowed, in Forbes and Parkes, NSW. She died tragically at her home in Parkes after choking on a piece of meat 14th February 1918. She was buried in the Parkes Cemetery.
