Hello there, I could use some help.
I am trying to decipher the residence at time of marriage on the marriage record of Dorcas Payne of 1850 (see upload).
Is it Clover Hill, Rahan? Can't find anything on Clover Hill. Would be very interested to know more about it.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Ingrid
I think you're definitely right about it being Clover Hill, Rahan. I've never heard of a Clover Hill there but there is a Church Hill, perhaps it was renamed over time? I know someone originally from Offaly actually I will ask them about it.aliciamccormack

I was talking to my friend today, shes heard of Rahan and been there once before but shes never heard of a Clover Hill there. However, I was researching a document i my homepalce in a document from 1749 the other day and it mentions several townlands I've never heard of. Apparently people around here used to live further down the fields instead of up by the roads and only came up to live by the roads in later years. So there was several small townlands further down but the names stopped being used because no one lived there anymore. It coulld be something similar with your Clover Hill. Maybe check out Griffiths Valuation(askaboutireand) and the Tithe Applotment Boooks(national archives), both online for free, to see if you locate your Payne ancestors in Offaly. There might be a mention of Clover Hill.
My friend says Rahan has a small village with a lot of surrounding countryside and farms.

Dear Ingrid:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out. We do have a volunteer in Rahan who may be able to assist you and I am copying this post to her.
If you don't hear from her in the next 2 weeks, please let me know.
All the best,

Hello
There is no Clover Hill in Rahan but there is a townland called The Clover
Do you think this might be the same place

Hello Geraldine,
I don't know if it could be The Clover. I can't find The Clover on townlands.ie.
According to my info William (the father) was from Ballycumber.
