Some of my Irish ancestors by the name of Harris emigrated from Ballybrittan to America in the first part of the 1800s.  I'd like to know if there are any people by the name of Harris still living in Ballybrittan.  If so, they might be my cousins.  Thanks for any help.

  • Hello

Apologies for the long delay in responding.  Clearing up outstanding queries now.

There is very little information I can give you as your query is broad in nature.

There was a George Harris living in Clonsast near Edenderry in the 1845 Griffiths Valuation.  There are only 4 other Harris names in Co Offaly who were listed on Griffiths and George is the nearest one to Kilbrittan.   In the 1901 Census there are 69 Harris named as living in Offaly and in 1911 the number was 68.

Best thing would be to do a DNA test and you may discover some Harris relations through that means.

Wishing you all the best with your searches.  If in the future you need any further information related to Co Offaly please re-post.

    Kind regards

  • Thank you for the reply.  My Harris ancestors were from Ballybrittan, not Kilbrittan.  Does that make a difference?  I have tested my DNA extensively and also of a male Harris cousin and uploaded his results to GEDmatch, but so far I've gotten no messages from anyone regarding the Harris family.

  • So sorry Mary Ellen. I meant Ballybrittan. It is just Kilbrittan is a  more familiar name to me. Apologies if I confused you.

  • Thanks again, Margaret.  I just looked at some of the Griffith's pages.  Unfortunately, my great-great-grandparents emigrated from Ireland to America in 1835, so before the Griffith's valuation.  I do not know who my gggrandfather's father was.  Could have been any one from the valuation list, or someone not in that county, too, even though I know they came from Ballybrittan per their tombstone.  I may never find out!

    Best wishes,

    Mary Ellen
