I would like to find out more about my Great Grandmother, Eliza McGowan particularly details of her birth or baptism.
She came to Australia some time prior to 1861, when she married my great grandfather, James Edmeades Tolhurst in Melbourne, Victoria.
She lived for much of her life in Torrumbarry, Victoria where the family had a Store, Post Office, Hotel and farm. She died on 14 June 1911.

James Edmeades TOLHURST, born 16 October 1835, County Kent, maried Eliza SMITH , born 1837, County Meath.
The wedding took place at Brighton, Melbourne on 11 April 1861. A lot of us thouigh that Eliza may have had another surname, because we could not find any relatives. You have just solved that problem!
James & Eliza were also my Great Great Grandparents.

I posted the initial comment some time ago in the mistaken belief that my great grandmother's birth surname was McGowan.
I have now ascertained that the information is incorrect and that her birth surname was Smith.
She had at least one sibling, Julia, who was born in 1824.
Julia married Patrick Coburn in Victoria, Australia in 1868.
I would very much like to find out about Eliza's date of birth, when she came to Australia and any other information.
