My Great great grand father, Thomas Phillips arrived in South Australia on the Ship "Birman" on 7 December 1840 which left from Greenock on 24 August 1840 via Cork Ireland. Thomas listed his occupation as a Labourer and his address as Kilmaley Co Clare Ireland and his age as 26 Years which suggests he was born in 1814. He married Mary Anne Cleary on 7 February 1842 at Holy Trinity Church Adelaide South Australia. They lived on a farm in Morphett Vale, South Australia and had six children: Margaret born 1846, married a Mr Hagget. John (My great Grandfather) born 1948, Married Ellen Hartigan in 1871. Anne born 1850, married William Athorn. Bridget born 1852, did not marry. Matthew born 1854 as no further records seems he died as an infant. Mary born 1955, married John Cunningham. Mary Anne Cleary also arrived on the "Birman" in 1840 with her parents, John and Mary Cleary, and two sisters and a brother.
Thomas died as a result of a farm accident 15 May 1856 his age 45 Years, (which suggests he was possibly born in 1811) He was burried at Morphett Vale, South Australia, death registration number 48 at St Mary's Catholic Church, Morphett Vale. I have no details of Thomas's family in Ireland. On checking have found a Thomas Phillips,Kildysart Parish 1826 and Matthew Phillips, Clondegad Parish, 1826. and wonder if there is a connection but so far have not found any other information.
