James Martin was born in Mullingar, County Westmeath, eldest child of Charles Martin and Mary Quinn. He had two younger sisters: Elizabeth b. Oct 1828 and Mary Anne b. Apr 1830. Charles Martin died sometime between 1829 and 1832, and Mary re-married to Thomas Langan, and had nine (or possibly more) other children. Thomas died in 1845. In 1847, Mary brought her children to America, settling first in Buchanan Co., Missouri, and then in Doniphan Co., Kansas. Mary died in Doniphan Co. in Aug 1858, and is buried at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Buchanan Co.
In Feb 1858, in Doniphan Co., Kansas, James married Bridget Ellen McCoy (1839-1898), daughter of Daniel McCoy and Catherine McClaity, another Irish immigrant, from County Armagh. They had seven children (that I know of): Charles (1858-1945), James (1862-1935), Mary Catherine (1864-1955) who was my great-great-grandmother, Oswald (1866-1960), Anna Elizabeth (1868-1953), Daniel Thomas (1871-1919), and Cecelia (1874-1953).
In 1865, James and Bridget brought their young family up the Oregon Trail, settling in Walla Walla County, in what is now Washington State. The family had a farm and a ranch, and appear on the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Walla Walla. Bridget died in May 1898. James appears on the 1892 Washington State and Territorial census, and on the 1910 census.
