The Great Famine in Ireland devastated Ballynakill and would have had a great impact on the family and the decision to emigrate to Australia. Ballynakill (Ballynahinch) civil parish had a 45% or greater loss in population between 1841 and 1851. Quite a few came to Bendigo.

Edmund, brother Patrick and their Uncle emigrated ahead of their mother, Anne. The uncle might be Martin TULLY as he was a sponsor to Edmond's sister, Honora Flood.
