I am hoping to connect with family who are still living in Newtown or anywhere else. My grandfather, grandmother, and great-uncle Joseph were very brave to set out for their long journey across the sea and across the United States to San Francisco, California. They were there during the great earthquake in 1906 and lost many of their possessions in the fire. In a few years they were able to move into a house on Eureka St. where they raised their family. Nora was struck down at an early age by a type of encephalitis. My father was John Barry the baby of the family who lost his mother when he was 11 years old. My Aunt Lenore, their oldest daughter, wrote me in a letter several years ago that her parents loved children and enjoyed having parties with musicians and jigs. My grandmother, Nora, kept in touch with her family back in Ireland. Two of her yougest sisters, Margaret and Bridget, emigrated to Canada and I have been unable to trace them. Her older siblings remained in Tipperary. My aunt said they lived on the family farm. They were Patrick, Mary Ann, and John (Jack) Barry. My Aunt Lenore corresponded with a cousin Margaret Barry from Ballinamoe. I believe she was the daughter of her Uncle Jack. All of my aunts and uncles are gone now. Lenore died in 1985 and my father John Barry died in 1969.
