  • I would be interested in hearing from the person who placed this post. I have been searching for my 3X great grandfather, Jackson Orr, and have hit a brick wall. Family lore says that among the children Jackson and his wife, Ann, had was a son named Robert with a birth date of 1833. I'm a descendent of their son Jackson G. Orr who was born in 1840 after the family had moved to NYC. We thought the Jackson Orr family was from County Armagh, not County Tyrone, but have found no records. If someone has further information they could pass along to see if this is indeed the same family, I would appreciate it. To contact me directly, you can email me at roborr3@gmail.com. Thank you.  ROB ORR

  • Hi Robert,

I am following up with a direct email in case you do not get notifiction of this comment.

I am in search of ANY records I can find regarding my Great Great Grandfather's family. All I have to go on at present is an extract from an immigration transcript here in Canada.

"Thomas Lang, has 3 brothers, George, Abraham and Samuel, also a Brother in Law, Joseph Barclay, all having families, they reside in the neighbourhood of Dungannon, parish, Glenfakle, county Tyrone, they can be recommended by Mr.Evans of said place."

Thomas was born abt 1791, assumably in Dungannon, Clonfacle, Tyrone as per above. His date of death is 18 May 1866 and he is buried here in Ottawa, CANADA. He married a Mary Orr born abt 1795 Ireland. They had two children while living in Ireland; Nancy(Agnus) born abt 1812 and Jane born abt 1819. Subsequent children James born "at sea" on their crossing in 1829, and George, my GGrandfather born here in Ottawa abt 1830.

There are a few sparse references to Langs and Longs on the Griffith Valuation and Tithe Applotments but I am stonewalled with anything beyond Thomas and Mary.

  • Hi Orr enquirers.  I have been looking for links to my Robert Orr and have had little luck except with his wife's family, the Youngs from Bockets.

The problem with Orrs is that they almost certainly came to Northern Ireland from Scotland and so tracing them back from the late 1700s probably requires searching in Scotland.

There is also the possibility that they retreated to Scotland and, unhappy there still, then left for other parts of the world.

Our Robert Orr had a father Andrew who I cannot pin down and probably a brother or cousin John in Tullyvannon but John 'evaporates' in the mid-1800s in terms of a family trail.

I know of no association with Lang or Long families by our limited number of Orr ancestors and a visit to PRONI in 2018 provided no new evidence.
