In Pender's Census of Ireland 1659, a James Farrell, Gent. was recorded in the townland of "Glanballetony" in the civil parish of Elphin.
A likely son of his was Iriel Farrell of Cloonyquinn, Co. Roscommon (died c.1690) who was married to Sarah Burke (d.1730), only daughter of Ulick Burke of Clare, Co. Galway. Their 3rd daughter Margery Farrell (c1673–1757) married Christopher French (d. 1718) of Tyrone, Co. Galway (eldest son of Arthur French, Mayor of Galway 1691).
By 1749, the only Farrells recorded in the Elphin area were in the townland of Cloghermore (Edmund Farrell and Daniel Farrell, farmers) and Cloonyquinn (Michael Farrell, farmer).
