We only recently found some information that says my grandfather, William Poole, was born in Rosenallis in 1865. Before that, we only knew he came from Ireland. He migrated to the US around 1897.

Looking at Rosenallis on the internet, I see there are others with the name Poole there.

Does anyone have any info about a William Poole who came from Rosenallis at that time or suggestions for where to look next?

Regards,

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and the only William Poole baptismal record was in 1862. See transcription below. Do you know his parents names to verify this record? I searched the 1901 and 1911 census records and found a possible 1901 record for William's mother and two siblings. By 1911, this Mary Poole had died. I located an 1899 death record for a John Poole and a 1902 record for a Mary Poole which may be for the parents of your William. See links below.

  • Belated thanks for the welcome and suggestions! Unfortunately, I never saw them till now. :- I'll have to make sure I get notices from this group.

Anyway, one of the links is new to me and will need looking into. Could be a generation further back than I have gone up to now.

In the past year and a half I've figured out a lot. I visited the farm Rosenallis in 2019 and went around talking to strangers till I found the farm in Dromnabehy townland where my granfather grew up. John Joe Poole, who lives there was happy to see me and we spent time looking at remnants of the original house, among other things. John Joe is from the Pooles of Capard and not a relation - or at least not a provable relation at this point. The trip was a nice reward for a lot of time looking at records.

So, I now know that William Poole, by great-grandfather was born in Dromnabehy and married Mary Dunne. Oddly, another William Poole and Mary Dunne of Capard got married in the same parish about 10 years later. That was a bit confusing for a while but not confusing after I visited the church in Rosenallis and found a bunch of Pooles and Dunnes all listed on the bulletin board for various reasons!

I'm continuing to research and would welcome any further help. Be back to Rosenallis when the pandemic permits it.

  • Hi Charlie!

We did have some issues back in 2018 with our posters not being notified about a new comment so possibly you were affected by that problem.

Very glad to hear you were able to make it over to Co. Laois last year and hopefully you can come back in 2021.

I went on the subscription site Roots Ireland and there were 3 additional Poole baptismal records where the parents were John Poole and Mary Dunne from Drumnabehy. Looks like there were a number of children for the family in Cappard.

The three records I located were: Bridget baptized October 3, 1852 (168 years ago), Art May 1 1858, John August 7 1859

Your John Poole and Mary Dunne were married in Clonaslee church on January 27 1851.  Clonaslee is the parish just to the west of Rathnallis in the northwest corner of Laois. The sponsors were Thomas Dunne and Maria Griffin. The other couple were married in Ballyfin church February 15 1859. Ballyfin is the parish just to the south of Rosenallis.

The Rosenallis records https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0730 start in 1823 (There are also some 18th century records available). I did not find a possible lead for the baptismal records for the John Poole who married in 1851. Possibly he was born/baptized right before 1823.

Let me know what questions you have.
