Mathew Henry McCleery was born on 10 March 1801 to Andrew and Sarah Weir McCleery on Knockadoo, Lissan, Derry. An older brother James was born about 1788. James emigrated in October 1821 to Strong, Franklin County, Maine, USA. Mathew followed in July 1822. It is not known why the bothers chose the remote town of Strong. It is believe that they may have had a family connection to a Robert McCleery who was born in County Derry in 1763, emigrated in 1787 and was one of the founders of the town of Strong in 1788. Robert was still living at the time of the McCleery brother's arrival.
I am interested in any information about the McCleerys of Lissan Parish, Derry.
