Patrick Henry Lavelle was my g-g-grandfather. On Monday, 1 April 1850, in company of his brother, Anthony, and their mother, Honor, they stole a sheep from an outhouse belonging to a Mr. T. Kelly of Dooeaghny, 3 miles from Ballina. Next day they were arrested by Const. Phibbs, and were subsequently sent to trial at Sligo. On Tuesday, 9/4/1850 the three were found guilty, and whereas Pat and Anthony were sentenced to Van Dieman's Land (now Tasmania, Australia) for a term of 7 years, Honor was given a sentence of 12 months hard labour. The brothers were transported aboard the Lord Auckland on 28/9/1852. I think Anthony won a Ticket of Leave in 1855, and Pat was granted one on 11/4/1857. Pat married Keziah Rachel Mead at Hobart on 4/7/1874, and they had 14 children. Pat was a carpenter, and he died on 20/10/1910 at Lindisfarne, Hobart, Tas.

Anthony, after being given his Ticket of Leave married Mary Ann Hogan, and they had at least one child together. On 7/9.1858 he was involved in an armed robbery at the Mt. Nelson Signal Station, Hobart in company with John Johnston and Thomas Gault, the ringleader. They had robbed another man pereviously that same evening, but when the trio were caught they weren't charged with that earlier robbery because the Signal Station was a Government instalation and therefore any major crime made against it would usually meet with a death sentence if the perpetrators were found guilty. Johnson was found not guilty, but Anthony and Gault were pronounced guilty and were sentenced to hand on 21 December, 1857. The day before the execusion Anthony received a Stay, whereas Thomas Gault, because of his numerous previous convictions, was executed in the morning of the 21st. Anthony was granted a pardon around 17/2/1870, and thereafter spent some time looking for his family and generally trying to get his life back together. Anthony had been visting his brother and his family at a time they were living in the southern reaches of Tasmania, and was now heading back to Hobart, being transported in a whaleboat owned by a man named McIntyre. Also aboard was the onwer's wife Mary McIntyre. Sometime in that night of 8/4/1872 the boat hit rough waters in The Narrows and was flipped. The only surviver was the boat owner. So, 22 years and one week after committing that first crime Anthony's came to an end, leaving no trace of his whereabouts.

Pat's family in Australia are finding it difficult to find anything more about the brothers and their mother in their early days on Achill, and would sincerely appreciate any help that our cousins on Achill can provide us with.

My Grandmother Violet Myrtle Occasia Fahey (Lavelle) 1900 - 1930 was the Daughter of William Anthony Lavelle and Mabel Winifred

Lavelle (Claridge).

I'm sorry but I don't know any of the history as I am just learning to try and find relatives.
