 I am researching the Doyle Family that came from Westmeath.(Kilcleagh parish and then Ballyloughloe parish ) Robert Doyle was born to James Doyle and unknown mother in @ 1840-1845.  (possibly Mary Larkin). I only found 2 children born to the couple.  James did remarry but not until @1854 to Brigid Monahan in Ballyloughloe.

They had Mary 1885, Margaret 1856, Bernard 1858, Brigid 1859, Ann 1861 James 1863.  Brigid died in 1867.

James remarried again to Maria OBrien in 1870 St Peters Athlone, Westmeath.  They had Edward 1871, Helena 1873, Eliza 1876, Thomas 1877, Bartholomew 1879, Mary Augusta 1880 and John Micheal 1881. 

The problem am having is positively proving Roberts parentage and the fact that there is a  12 year gap in children which is highly unlikely.  Also with the naming pattern I find it unlikely that there were no other children because according to James last marraige his father was Patrick. I see no Patrick in any of his children nor do I see a James until 1863.

Robert Immigrated and went by Robert Patrick so that goes with the above, however its a little odd that Robert would be the name of his likely first child.  

The family ended living on Connaught St in Athlone Westmeath from 1870 on.  James died in 1898 states he was 72 however that is off shich is not uncommon, St  because he is the father to Robert ( proven through his step sister Mary who sent her daughter to Robert in 1895 and she is listed as Mary Sweeney Roberts niece in the 1900 US census.  Her marraige records says her father was John Sweeney and mother Mary Doyle of westmeath). who was born @ 1840 that would have made James only @ 14 when James was born,

If this sounds familiar to anyone or I can get advice on how to fill in the blank between 1843 and 1855 I would be very grateful. I found most of my answers on rootsireland.ie and irishgenealogy.ie.

    You may have these records from Roots Ireland but your message in the first paragraph indicates, you did not have all the dates. James and Mary Larkin married in 1840 in Lemanaghan which is a parish on the Westmeath/Offaly border. They had Robert in 1841 and Edward in 1843. I assume Mary died sometime after 1843 and possibly Edward died young since there was another Edward in 1871. You mention that a 12 year gap in births is highly unlikely. However, if Mary died right after 1843 and James did not remarry until around 1854, wouldn''t that explain the 12 year gap?

    I did find those records and found a death of a Mary Doyle in 1847 however no idea if this was his wife.  And yes of course that does explain the 12 year gap however in that time it was highly unusual for a man to stay widowed so long especially with young children (or child ).  And I am guessing James would have been young.  Im not saying its impossible just unlikely. I was thinking I missed a marraige and some possible children somewhere. Especially because in his other two marraiges he did not name one of his sons after his father Patrick.

    Also I am not very familiar with the parishes and was wondering if you could tell me if going from Lemonaghan to Kilcleagh and then to Ballyloughloe would be likely and if you think I am on the right track with this Robert born to James and Mary nee Larkin.

    James last marraige took the family to Athlone with most children being born in St Peters Parish Roscommon, but lived in Westmeath. And in 1867 his wife Brigid nee Monahan died in Bealnamulla which is Roscommon. I can see that both areas are very close to the borders of the counties so that does seem likely.

    Are there any other resourses I can use that you know of that may help me prove this lineage I have for Robert Doyle.

    PS One of James grandaughter Delia Naughton married a John McDonnell in 1883 his parents were John and Brigid Costello, any relation LOL

    Going from Lemonaghan to Kilcleagh to Ballyloughloe would be likely. I'm looking at my civil parish maps and the three parishes are one on top of the other. Lemonaghan and north to Kilcleagh and north to Ballylougloe.

    I have a couple of John McDonnells in my line but no match with your ancestor.
