My husband’s 3X great grandparents both came from Clonmellon to South Australia.
Mary GARRIGAN bapt. 9 Sep 1824 Cloran Clonmellon to parents Thomas GARRIGAN and Elizabeth (Betty) BAXTER. The also had other children
Catherine bap. 24 Feb 1830 Moygrehan
Peter bap 1 Jul 1832 Moygrehan
Myles 15 Aug 1826 Clonmellon
Patrick 27 Jan 1836 Cloran Clonmellon
Mary GARRIGAN sailed on the TRAFALGAR which left London on 4th March 1847 (Plymouth 18th March) and arrived in Adelaide South Australia July 3rd. 279 Free immigrants . Also on board were Myles, Peter and Patrick.
Mary was recruited form the workers on Sir Montague Chapman’s estate—Killua.
In Adelaide she met and married William PLUNKETT bapt 1 Jul 1824 Clonmellon and whose parents were Michael PLUNKETT and Mary GARAGAN/GUAGAN who had arrived in Adelaide 4 Sep 1847 on the ABOUKIR. He too was from Sir Montague Chapman’s estate.
The pair had 9 children some of whom I have been unable to trace. After Mary died about 1862 William seems to have abandoned his children some of whom ended up in “The Destitute” in Adelaide. ( I am trying to follow this up).
I have details of Myles and Patrick Garrigan’s family here in Australia and also of some of the children of Willia PLUNKETT and Mary GARRIGAN.
If anyone has more information or indeed would like information fell free to contact me.
Sir Montague Chapman’s story here in South Australia has not been fully documented probably because of his early death.
