Patrick Clune : Short Biography

The Clune farm at Cloontysmarra contained a cluster of homes at the southernmost end of the townland (near the roadside and the old schoolhouse). Patrick Clune married Mary Kelly circa 1830. 

In the 1843 Tithes Records for 'Cloontymarra', Patt Clune & Mary Kelly held 7 Irish acres of land next door to John Kelly and Edmund Clune who each had half as much land (suggesting a subdivision had been made for Edmund and John).  Further along the road, near Cloonanaha Bridge, a Matthew Clune, of Cloonanaha East (with 6 Irish acres somewhere between Hegarty GV#16 and Frawley GV#13 farms) had to be related. Cloonanaha village saw major clearances during the Great Famine. 

By 1855, at the time of Griffith's Valuation, Matthew Clune was no longer on record and Patrick Clune's 49-acre farm was recorded as GV#11a at Cloontysmarra (with James Clune in a smaller house #11b). The following year, Patt and Brigid Clune christened a son, James (1856-1915).

Their son, Thomas Clune (b. 1846) married Brigid Kelly in 1875. In 1870, their son John Clune (b.1849) married Brigid Donoghue and ran a shop and farm nearby at Knockogonnell.

In 1879, James Clune (1856-1915) married into the neighbouring Hynes farm at GV#5 Cloontysmarra (on Neville's former holding).  

In 1880, Patrick Clune Sr. died at home with his son Thomas Clune present at death. His wife Mary, lived well into her 90s and died sometime between 1901 and 1911. 

The Clune family farm at Cloontysmarra was inherited by Thomas Clune.
