My name is Dennis James Morton and I reside in Sydney, Australia. My great-grandfather came to Australia from Ireland via the Otago region to mine gold firstly starting in Victoria and then migrating to NSW.

My Grandfather, James Michael Morton was born on the 29/07/1878 (Ref: 1878/793/2991) in Queenstown, NZ and died in Adelong, NSW. He married Harriet George in Roxburgh (born Roxburgh, NZ 04/09/1878) and died in 1941 in Manly, NSW.

James Michael Morton was the son of Edward Morton, born in Boyle, Roscommon, Ireland (Irish Revenue Police: 1852-1855) and Bridget Roughan (Rowan) born in about (3rd July?) 1842 Tulla, County Clare, Ireland. Bridget's parents might have been Mathew Roughan and Mary Donohue. Edward and Bridget separately migrated from Ireland to the Otago region where they married in Lawrence. Edward was a Sergeant of police serving in Queenstown, the Otago goldfields (Orepuki, Wakatip), Stewart Island and he eventually retired as Police Inspector in Invercargill where he died in 1891.

Edward married Bridget Roughnan (Rowan) on 13th November 1873 in Lawrence, NZ (NZ cert no. 1873/1358 issued by NZ Registrar of BDM – no useful information on wedding certifiacte). Bridget is listed as being born in Tulla, Clare, Ireland and was 33 and a domestic servant. They had 4 children, Lawrence William John (Born 1880 in Naseby, NZ and died 21/02/1911 in Porepunkah, Victoria), Edith Bridget (born 1874;), Felix Edward (born 1876; Died 1947, Invercargill) and James Michael Morton (born 29/07/1878 in Roxburgh, NZ and died 19/12/1926 in Adelong, NSW).

I was hoping to gather some information on the Roughan (Rowan) side of the family from Tulla, County Clare. As far as I  understand there was also another Roughan family (Denis and Bridget) from Tulla, County Clare also living in Lawrence at the same time – I am not sure if there was any family relationship?

  • Edward Morton (Inspector of Police – Invercargill; D: 11/10/1891)) married Bridget Roughan (Rowan) in 1873 in Lawrence (NZ cert no. 1873/1358 issued by NZ Registrar of BDM and I have a copy but there is no useful family information on the wedding certificate eg,. Parents names etc.
  • Bridget Morton died 23/09/1923 invercargill, NZ

I would greatly appreciate any assistance that you might be able to provide researching Bridget’s time in Tulla, Ireland.

Many thanks,

Dennis.

  • I have had some research work completed by the Clare Heritage Centre and it is likely that Bridget was the daughter of Mathew Roughan and Mary Donohue. Bridget was baptised on the 3rd July, 1842

    Any assistance would be welcome
