She was born in Carrick on Shannon, in Leitrim County on 27, April, 1887. She was a twin (her twin was named Farrell, after their father.)
Her parents were Farrell Ward (born abt. 1840) and Mary Gilbane/Kilbane/Kilbanne (born abt. 1842), both in County Leitrim.
The family lived in Gortnagullion, Shanraw and are listed in both the 1901 and 1911 Irish census.
