Garbally Court was built in the 17th century as the seat of the Earl of Clancarty, in Ballinasloe Co. Galway. According to the Irish Georgian Society, the House was designed by English architect Thomas Cundy.
After the Declaration of the Free State, the diocese of Clonfert purchased the house and estate from the trustees of the Earls of Clancarty for £6,750 in 1922. It was transformed into a boys school which is the purpose it still serves to this day. The diocese also purchased the Cloncarty Dowager home at Coorheen House in Loughrea Co. Galway, which is now in use as the Bishop's Palace.
The current Earl of Clancarty is Nicholas Le Poer Trench, the 9th Earl of Clancarty. He was born in Uxbridge in 1952 and is an artist and freelance writer. He is married to journalist Victoria Lambert, with whom he has a daughter.

My great grandfather, Alexander Boden, purchased "Cahir", Ballinalsoe, County Galway around 1880 (?) (listed at Caher House in the Landed Estates - NUI Glaway). In the description of Caher on the Landed Estates site it mentions that this property was originally part of the Clancarty estate. I am very interested to know the orgins of this home and would appreciate any addtional information that you can provide.

My grandmother spoke kindly about the adult of the house. When my grandmother got married she wS given two small glass cream jugs

My mother was Patricia Sammon. Her great-grandfather was Thomas Sammon who was born in Corbally, County Galway in 1818 according to his tombstone at this death in 1887 in Iowa. He immigrated to America in 1836. He was illiterate and we believe he may have come from Gorbally, not Corbally. Can you please tell me if there are any records of Sammon or Salmon family members associated with the estate?
