Looking for Mayclim, perhaps originally from County Armagh, around Keady. But they settled in to Silverstream, just across the border. Cavanreagh. In Armagh, they are also known as Meaklim.
Robert Mayclim (I think) is my g-g-grandfather who married Margaret Benson. They had 6 children: Margaret, Robert, John, James, Samuel, & Ann. As far as I know. I believe Robert stayed in Ireland. Margaret went to Ohio between 1854 & 1858. James & John went to US in May, 1859, Samuel went to Australia c. 1865-6, & Ann went to Ohio c. 1864-70.
James was my g-grandfather who fought in US Civil War. Can't find John. Misspelling of surname rampant: Mazelim, Maydim, Maclan, Maklim, etc. To confuse matters more, name in US is pronounced Macklim/Macklin & there are a number of Macklins from that same area who are NOT, to my knowledge, related. The Mayclims in Ireland are Protestant & the Macklins there are Catholic.

It is John Grenham's contention that the original variant was due to different "recorders" hearing the same name differently & thus recording it differently. He said in 19th century Ireland, many had never even seen their name in print. And in that time, "ay" was pronounced the same as "ea." Thus, "Would you care for a cup of tay?"
So, that's my story & I'm sticking to it." As you folk might say.
