Elizabeth Roche, known as Lilly, was born in Mallow, Cork on 11 June 1832. Her father was Thomas Roche whose business was farming, limeburning and stone quarrying. Her mother was Frances Matilda Martin. Lilly had one sister and three brothers who survived to adulthood, two of those brothers and the sister went to the States while the remaining brother, the youngest sibling Charles Hovenden Roche was a doctor in Cork City. Lilly married John McCarthy  at St Lukes Church of Ireland, Cork City on 20 November 1855. John was a master cooper from Fair Lane, Cork City, he was born about 1824 and was a widower when he married Lilly.

They had three children, Francis Justin born 1859, Arabella Jane born in 1862 and Olivia Frances born 1864. Frank and Arabella came to Australia and Olivia moved to Washington, USA. John McCarthy died at 1 Fair Lane, Cork City on 4 October 1868. Lilly remarried Homan Haines Rice at St Lukes, Cork City on 22 December 1872, Homan was a clockmaker from Mallow and the family returned there. They had a son, Homan Rice born 23 May 1874 in Main St., Mallow. Lilly and Homan's marriage broke up and Homan junior and senior came to Australia with Arabella and her husband in 1884. It is not known when and where Lilly died. Her brother Robert wrote a memoir after 1880 where he stated she had gone to Peru, South America.

  • My ancestor Honora Roache bt 1813 married Thomas Crone in 1833 in Donetaile Cork but a numbrr of their 6 children were born in Mallow ( spellings in many
cases were incorrect very hard to trace) She may be related as she also came to Melbourne, Australia with her husband in 1862 He died suddenly in 1871 I found them in the peerage pages. Another coincidence maybe was that her daughter Margaret Crone 1844 married into the William 1845 and Richard Couche 1838 family of Mitchelstown William 1845-1913 m mary anne Mccarthy in Ballarat Vic in 1875. I do have her parents they moved around a lot in uk and Ireland.Loved the photo. My email is penoestra 'at' hotmail. Com if you need further information. Happy new year Jeanne

  • Thank you for the message Jeanne, I hope your New Year will be a good one.

As far as I know Honora doesn't belong to my line of Roches but who knows? She is not a sibling of Thomas b 1802, Lilly's father, who she is a similar age to, as far as I know his sisters were Elizabeth & Ellen, their father Thomas Roche and mother Elizabeth Haines. Elizabeth Haines' father was Charles Haines and mother Dorothy Homan, if any of these names mean anything to you. A number of these Roches were doctors or apothecaries and they were Church of Ireland, if any of this provides a clue.

    Cheers

  • Thanks for the message Jen. This isn't the same family as far as I know. My McCarthys were from Cork city, apparently there are so many Mccarthys in Cork no one has ever sorted them out.
    Cheers Sue

Thanks once again for the information Jen but there isn't anything to tie things up. McCarthy is such a difficult name to pin down. I've had dna matches with McCarthys from Cork but we still can't find the link.
That's very interesting Margaret sold flowers to send her children to  Australia, can't have been easy.

Hope you're having a decent Christmas with all this wretched Covid on the go

    Best wishes

    Sue McCarthy
