Patrick Flanagan 1906

Back to List

Patrick was born in March 1906 in the small village of Tulsk in County Roscommon. He was the second child of James Flanagan and Mary Jane Maxwell, and likely named after his paternal uncle. He had an older brother called Thomas and three younger siblings, Mary Anne, Bridget and Michael. Michael died as a baby in 1913, when Patrick was six years old.

Patrick's mother Mary Jane was very sickly and delicate and ill frequently and spent a lot of time with Rush relatives in Rathcroghan.

The Flanagans lived in a four roomed slated house with five front windows, leased from Captain French. Patrick's father James worked as a blacksmith in a forge beside their house. They also kept chickens in a small fowl house.

Patrick's father was a nationalist and supporter of the Home Rule Party. Patrick was a teenager during the Irish fight for independence. Patrick likely attended Tulsk National School but didn't receive further education. He probably played football as his father was heavily involved in the GAA. He didn't follow in his father's profession as a blacksmith but instead became a farmer.

In 1928, when Patrick was twenty two, his mother died from burns she received after tumbling from her chair into the family's large open fire and her nightdress catching fire. In 1935, Patrick's sister Mary Anne died from health complications in her twenties. Sometime in the 1930s, his sister Bridget went to Dublin to work as a housekeeper in a strict convent, and as far as is known, did not keep in contact or visit again. Patrick lived at home with his father and brother until James's death in 1944.

Patrick's uncle Martin Flanagan owned a shop in Kilbride and proposed a match between Patrick and Lily Dockery, his neighbour's niece. The pair met a few times and both agreed to the match. They were married in 1945 with Martin as Patrick's best man and Lily's sister Teresa as bridesmaid. Patrick and Lily had one daughter and two sons during their marraige. However Patrick died unexpectedly in 1953 at the age of forty seven, tragically before the birth of his third child. He is buried in Tulsk Graveyard
