The Wexford Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1840. The Workhouse was opened in 1842 at a cost of £6,900. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 600 inmates. The Wexford Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Ambrosetown, Ardcolm, Bannow, Kilpatrick, Killurin, Kilmore, lady's Island, Mayglass, Mulrankin, Roslare, Rathaspick, Tacumpshin, Taghmon, and Wexford.

The Wexford Workhouse site is now occupied by the Wexford General Hospital. Many of the original buildings are still standing, though not currently in use as part of the hospital complex.

  • Nicholas White (Abt 1833 to 1913).

I believe that my second great grandfather, Nicholas White, lived at the Wexford Workhouse and died there on 21 October 1913, a widower, at age 80, as listed on the death register. He was a farmer and lived with his family in Taghmon parish. His wife was Catherine Walsh. Their children were born in the Ardenagh Great townsland according to birth/baptism registers, from 1861 (Margaret) to 1878 (John), and baptized at Taghmon.

Two of his daughters, Mary and Catherine White, emigrated to America. Mary emigrated sometime prior to 1898, when she married Joseph Gaetze in Anaconda, Montana. Mary had no children. Catherine, my great-grandmother, emigrated in 1906, and met her married sister in South Dakota. Catherine married Adam Knapp in 1910 in SD and they had one daughter, my grandmother, Margaret Knapp, in 1915.

The story told by my grandmother is that the two girls went to America, and the two boys stayed back in Ireland.  I think one of the brothers who stayed in Ireland was the youngest son, John, who appears at age 23 on the 1901 census. The other may have been Thomas (1863) who I believe is the Thomas White listed as having an older brother, Nicholas, living with him in 1911 on the census in a nearby townsland. The ages match up for this to be the son-father pair. We do not know what happend to Nicholas' two surviving sons, but have a postcard from an Anastasia to John White in our family records as the only clue. The front shows the Ferrycarrig bridge in Wexford.

I would love to know more about my second great grandfather Nicholas White's family and his other descendents in Ireland, but have been unable thus far to find his and Catherine Walsh's marriage register record, nor marriage records for the sons.

  • Hello,

Have you created Chronicles for your Ancestors? If not then I would advise creating one and linking them to the Workhouse. This will bring your Ancestors to the attention of our wonderful volunteers who may be able to provide you with some pointers. It also sounds like a great story so I'm sure our members would love to read it.

Best of luck with your search

  • Hello, and thank you.

I was in contact with someone in Taghmon Parish through a posting on the Ireland XO site about a year or two ago. Is that what you mean? The volunteer was not able to find anything beyond what I had without combing personally through the unindexed parish register. The person agreed that Nicholas White who died at the Wexford Workhouse in 1913 was most probably my ancestor.

  • Hi Anne,

That's great that you were able to connect, but I meant more our online volunteers might be able to help out.

  • Hi again,

Yes, a volunteer helped me, actually in a Taghmon message board group. Here is the discussion thread from a couple of years ago: https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/message-board/kate-white-1906-immigran…
