Murto Hurley was convicted at Cork City of stealing a cow on 1 April 1827 and transported onboard the ship Eliza and arrived into Sydney on 8 November 1827. Murto was also known as Mortimer and Murtagh.

His Death Record of 23 June 1859 noted his name as Murthey Hurley of Good Good, District of Cooma, NSW aged 72. He was employed as a Bushman, had been infirm for 3 weeks. • The following information is submitted in relation to my 2nd Great Grandfather Mortimer Hurley:

Mortimer was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1793 and baptized on 2 June 1793 in the Parish of Enniskeane, Diocese of Cork & Ross, County of Cork, Ireland. Parish records reveal that his parents were Pat Hurly & Mary Barret. He is described as Murtagh, Mertho, Morto, Murto, Murtho, Murthey and Daniel in various records/documents.

  • Hi Hurls1949, do you believe that this is the same Mortimer in the original Chronicle? I don't believe there are details relating to his parents and it would be interesting to see if Pat Hurly and Mary are the names. Do you know if there are any descendants of Mortimer (the one you reference) still in County Cork?

    Thank you,

  • Laura,

I am of the opinion that Murtagh left a wife (Mary Lyne), one child (Daniel) possibly two (Ellanora), behind in Ireland after being transported to NSW, Australia in 1827.

He re-married on 23rd november, 1841, to Margaret Mara.

Potentially, I have relatives (from Murtagh's 1st marriage) still residing in Ireland.
