Hello, I am currently researching my great grandfather, Thomas Doyle, who emigratged to Australia in 1858. My husband and I plan to visit Ireland in May next year, and I am trying to find out more about where Thomas lived, and possibly meet up with some of my Doyle relatives.
Thomas Doyle was baptised on the 20th December, 1834, in Boherlahan, Tipperary, in the Church of The Immaculate Conception. His father was John Doyle and his mother Anna (Hannah) Garrett. The family was noted as living in Longfield at the time of Thomas's baptism.
Thomas had several siblings: Mary who was baptised in 1833, Nancy 1837, Catherine 1839, Hanna 1842, John 1844, Judith 1847 and Lucy 1851. During this time, the Doyle family lived in Longfield, Lisbook/Lisbuik and Ballycamusk.
Thomas emigrated to Australia on board the vessel the Castilian, and arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on the 13th June 1858. The Castilian's log recorded him as being a 23 year old farm laborer from County Tipperary, a Roman Catholic who could both read and write. Another source "People who were born in Tipperary who emigrated to Australia", noted that Thomas was living in Longfield at the time of his emigration and that his sister Ann (Hanna) paid for his passage.
Thomas married Johanna Stapeton in 1873, in Murumburrah, New South Wales, Australia. They had nine children, including my grandfather, Stephen Vincent Doyle. Thomas worked as a farm laborer in Murrumburrah and Canowindra New South Wales, and died at age 57 in Billimarri, near Canowindra.
Hopefully this post might be able to connect me with some of my Doyle relatives, as I would really love to meet my Irish relatives. As Thomas could read and write, there might even be some school records or even photographs of him?
Many thanks - Gabrielle
