While on holiday and constantly looking for any signs of my family that may be buried this area or any records, I received some information about a cemetery on the Ballymore road south of Moyvore and half way between there and Ballymore. At first it was supposed to be right next to the road but indeed it is across a field and well into the next one. We stopped and asked permission from the landowner to enter. I have some pictures of it and if anyone is interested, I can send them on. It is a catholic cemetery that appears to be very local people, the earliest date on the headstones we found was 1776. It is in a state of lots of brambles, ivy and nettles and am sure there are many more headstones unable to be seen. There is a record of this graveyard in the 'Under the Hill of Uisneach' book which is a bit tough to get  ahold of. We were able to find some of the names in the book that we saw. I was able to find and Edward and Patrick Kelly listed in the book but still no sign of Timothy Kelly. Perhaps this will help some other people looking for remote cemeteries in the area.

  • I am very interested in this hidden and remote cemetery that you located in Templepatrick.  I believe it is possible that I have ancestors buried there.  I am looking for Edward Carroll (Ned), his 3 sons, Edward Jr., John and Thomas Carroll.  Per family storiies, and also recorded in Annuls of Westmeath 23 to 28, these 4 Carrolls died at the hands of "The Walking Gallows" June 19, 1797.  They were from Gardenstown, Moyvore.  Their names are on casualty list for 1798 Rising.  I would be very appreciative of anything you may share on your discovery, and also how you located the book "Under the Hill of Uisneach" .

  • Hello Ann. I have passed your information onto my friends in Ireland with whom I found the cemetery last year. It is their friend who has the book. It is very hard to come by and he paid a dear price for it but has so much information on all of the cemeteries around this area. Most of the ones that are kept up have a reference board at the entrance you can consult for names but this one is in the back 40 for sure but so fun to find. It is overgrown and needs help but I won't be traveling back this year. If you like I can try and send a google earth photo of the place, it is just south of Moyvore.

Thank you very much, for this reply and also sharing the google earth photo. This means so much to me!  Does the book your friends hold have information about Westmeath only?  My Carroll ancestors moved over to Longford after these men were killed and most of the town was burned that same night. The same day these Carrolls were killed, June 19, 1797, according to the account in the Annuals of Westmeath, 3 other men were killed that day, and they may also be buried at Templepatrick.  I do know for certain that my great great grandfather, Michael Carroll, was a Blacksmith in nearby Longford and died in 1865.  I will also be searching for possible graves in Longford for him and his family there.  After his death, his 7 orphaned children went to New York on a ship in 1865. Again, my thanks to you for sharing your experience of what and how you learned of your family, the Kellys.  I also have some Kelly family. My great grandmother, Elizabeth Kelly married James Carroll, (the baby, in the 7 orphaned children from Longford in New York! )  I believe her Kelly family was from Sligo.
