I am not sure where John Ballam came from, but he resided in Ballyfarnon with his wife Anne Jane Hawksby(B: Ballymote Sligo) He was a merchant and a lay Methodist minister, John was the prime mover to having the |Methodist Church built, it may now still be a tyre store. Both John and Anne Jane are buried in the Kilronan Churchyard,
They had seven children. I am desended from their son Duke, who left Ireland at approx, 14/15 years on assisted passage aboard the War Spirit, landing in Victoria Australia on 13 june 1857, From there I have found nothing until 1867 where there is a newspaper annoncement for his pending marriage to Constance Underhill (Kingston ON Canada) There is a book "Charleston-Its Rise and Decline" by Irwin Faris that notes that william Ballam was a driver for the Crewdson and Leydon there is some thought the it is Duke Ballam as there is no other record for William Ballam.
I would like to find any info on Duke prior to leaving Ireland. I have been told that records were destroyed in a fire.
