Martin was born on the 27th of December 1897 in Lomcloon, in the civil parish of Killaraght, Co. Sligo. His parents were Martin, a farmer, and Marie (née McDonagh) Hannon.
The 1901 census lists Martin's siblings as; Ellen (11), Annie (9), Mary (7), Thomas (5), and Bridget (1). At the time of the census, Martin was 3 years old. According to the census, Ellen and Annie were both born in New York, but the younger children, including Martin were all born in Co. Sligo, as were both of their parents.
As an adult Martin relocated to Birmingham. He married Winifred Mary Hewson on the 21st of January 1930.
Martin died on the 17th of October 1972 in Birmingham.
