The Christian Brothers School on Dublin's Synge Street was founded in 1864. It is a post primary Catholic school for boys. The school building has seen a number of expansions over the years as neighbouring cottages were purchased and demolished to make room for the ever expanding student body.
The first student to be enrolled in the school was the son of the then Mayor of Dublin City. The school has long been a popular one and can count politicians, sports stars, and media giants amongst its alumni. Notable names are Liam Cosgrave, Gay Byrne, Mike Murphy, and Liam Whelan.
The school is regarded as one of the best in Ireland when it comes to the Young Scientist Award, as it has one of the best success rates in the competition. This is largely credited to an excellent Science teacher named Jim Cooke, who is now retired
The school also features in the 2016 movie, Sing Street, about a group of boys who start up a band and highlight the musical influences of the mind 1980's.
