Priosun Chill Mhantain aka Wicklow Gaol was built late eighteenth century. County Wicklow was one of the main areas of conflict during the 1798 Rebellion and several important rebels were imprisoned at Wicklow Gaol during and after the struggle. Famous Wicklow rebel leaders include General Joseph Holt, Michael Dwyer, William “Billy” Byrne and James Napper Tandy.
The gaol was extended in 1822, and the present structure dates to 1842-3.
Renovated circa 1995, the gaol is now in use as museum and visitor centre.
