  • Hi Jim, Thank you for replying and yes Baldwin was my grandfather, i have been able to trace my Spencer line back to 1790 in the Shinrone area, we emigrated to London in the late fifties and my Mothers brothers went to America, everyone lost touch with one another so i am trying to learn as much as possible about the family, Dick Spencer who had the shop up by the church was a first cousin to my mother their fathers being brothers,

    Hello Spencer.

My grandfather was John N Spencer Tipperary, 1902-1938. His daughter (my mother)'s DNA seems to indicate that he was a ?cousin of Baldwin Spencer's family, the mutual ancestor being one of a tangled web of undecided Spencers: some protestant and some branches, catholic. Was your 1790s ancestor Henry Spencer, born speculatively 1790s, and was he a servant to the ??Vaughan family? We have been attempting to establish whether that the line goes back through the Spencers of Redgate Farm, Carngort and would be happy to know if any documents through light on this.

    Best wishes,

    ela

    Hello Spencer

I see that Baldwin Spencer married Mary Tierney of Corolanty in 1901 in Mount St Joseph's Abbey Church.  That is not the local church in Shinrone - it belongs to the Cistercian Order and is located between Roscrea and Shinrone.  I am a volunteer with Ireland Reaching Out in a neighbouring parish and if you have any specific questions about the area please fell free to email me on kilcolmanoffaly@irelandxo.com and I will try and assist you.      Margaret

  • Hi Ela

Henry Spencer 1790 (servant) was my Great Great Grandfather his son Henry (Harry) beign my Great grandfather  1820-1904 and father to Baldwin, at the time of Henry;s marriage to "Marie Walsh" mixed marriages in Ireland were only allowed by the RC church on condition that children of that union be raised as roman catholic's, this is where the split occured in the Spencer families as Marie was a catholic and Henry protestent so their offspring were raised in the catholic faith, prior to this the Spencer's were church of england, from what little i gleamed from my mother the split was quite bitter with neither side speaking to the other afterwards,i did a lot of research years ago but i have had a serious illness and have not done much since, i will have to sort out all my paperwork over Christmas and anything i find i will post on here, I had tracked Samuel Spencer 1765 as being Henry 1790 father and Henry 1740 as being Samuel's father but i was not able to find any proof of this (so far) Samuel was Redgate farm , I believe Henry 1790 was born at Knockshenagowa ( fairy hill).

  • Looking for the following information on the Spencer family.  DNA evidence shows Samuel Spencer (1765; or 1758 as alternate birth date) to be my 4th G Grandfather.  Ancestry.com also shows ThruLine connections and/or DNA connections to:

    Samuel's father Henry (1740/41 - 1822) and wife Ann Tebbs (1742 - 1792) 5th G Grandfather/mother

    Samuel's son, William ( 1794-1869) and wife Jane Maher  3rd G Grandfather/mother

William's son William Spencer (1816-1888) and wife Bridget Meara (1819 -1908) 2nd G Grandfather/mother  NOTE - William (1816) supposedly also worked for the Vaughan family at the Golden Grove House and Estate.  This would make me a distant cousin to Ela (see12/10/2019 message) since William (1794) and Ela's 2nd G Grandfather , Henry (1790) were brothers.

I am trying to confirm where Samuel was born.  I have seen various birth dates and potential connections to both Redgate Farm and Leicester, England for both Samuel and his father, Henry.   Trying to determine if and when this part of the Spencer family came to Ireland from England.  However, I have been unable to locate definitive evidence ... mainly just names listed on various family trees with no source information.  I'd like to be able to trace the Spencer line as far back beyond Henry and Samuel as possible.

Any information or pointers would be most appreciated.  Thanks

    John D. Spencer

  • An Ancestry post suggests that Samuel Spencer, born 1758, at  Redgate farm is my 5 times great grandfather. Th post also states that he died at Redgate Farm . His children ar listed as John (1778-1890), Elizabeth (b 1788 ) Henry (b1790), Eleanor Ellen (1792-1877 Canada), William (1794-1869), Samuel (b 1794) Mary (1799-1885), Martha (1800-1879). I did not undertake the research on this part of the family)

His daughter Elizabeth married William Blackwell(1794)  One daughter Mary Anne married Henry Wallace  Henry & Mary Anne and two children emigrated to Australia in 1850. They were accompanied by Mary Anne's sister Catherine   The research on the Wallace/Blackwell family was undertaken by a second cousin - he had access to certificates.

  • Thanks for your response to my post.  My DNA results show 7 matches to Samuel Spencer via his children: Henry (1 match); John (4); Eleanor (1)  and Martha (1).   I personally am a descendant of William.  While the number of segments and cM for each match are small, having this many DNA matches across numerous siblings in the same family hopefully provides more confidence of a true family connection.

As to Samuel's parents, I have seen the name, and have a possible DNA match to Henry (1740 or 41),  but can only find a connection to England (Leicester), not Redgate or Ireland.  The same is true for Henry's wife, Ann Tebbs ... a possible DNA match but nothing leading back to Redgate.  So if you or anyone else has evidence of the Spencers of Redgate Farm prior to 1758, I'd really like to understand the correct lineage, whether in Ireland or England.
