In 1585, Hugh O'Neill, also known simply as 'The O'Neill' became the Earl of Tyrone.
He was awarded the title and associated lands by the English crown after aiding the English forces in the second Desmond rebellion, though he later turned against them in the Nine Years War.
O'Neill was one of the Irish nobility who left Ireland during The Flight of the Earls.
He died in Rome in 1607.
