  • Dia Duit As Gaeilge,

A transcription from the Find May Past (FMP) website actually shows that Patrick Carrol was baptized in the Ballybricken and Bohermore Catholic Parish, County Limerick, on 18 August 1838, rather than 10 March 1849. The residence of Patrick and his parents at the time of the baptism was Stonepark.

Patrick’s father is John Carrol, but his mother Honora’s maiden name is transcribed as “Liuet,” rather than Lysaght. You can access the baptism transcription at the following link. Before the transcription appears however, you will have to establish a free account with FMP:
    https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FBAP%2F0492444

Honora’s maiden name looks like it is one of the many alternate Lysaght/McLysaght surname variants. To see all the variants of the surname, go to the John Grenham website link at: https://www.johngrenham.com/findasurname.php?surname=lysaght

See the right side of the John Grenham page under the subheading, “Non-Griffith's Variants.”

The link that follows takes you to the parish register where Patrick’s baptism is recorded. The parish register comes from the National Library of Ireland, and is free to access: https://tinyurl.com/4a6jd85j

Because the page is dark and the handwriting is small, the spelling of Honora’s maiden name is difficult to determine exactly. It could be Liset or Licet, which are very close to the first two variants recorded by John Grenham.

The baptism record shows the first name of Patrick’s godfather is “Richd,” that is, Richard. I’m not sure what his last name is. The godmother is Mary Licet or Liset.

What Patrick’s baptism reveals is that instead of being 75 years old when he died in 1924, he would have actually been 86 years old when he died in 1924.

With further research at the FMP website, I discovered the Ballybricken and Bohermore Catholic Parish baptism transcriptions for four of Patrick’s siblings. The names of the siblings and years of their baptisms are below. I’ve also included Patrick in the list of children so that you can see the full chronology of the baptisms:

    Margaret Carrol, 1833
    Ellen Carrol, 1836
    Patrick Carrol, 1838
    Michael Carrol, 1841
    Ellen Carrol, 1845

The baptism of a second child named Ellen in 1845, means the first-born Ellen had died.

    MARGARET CARROL’S BAPTISM

The FMP transcription shows that Margaret Carrol was baptized on 20 February 1833. At the time of the baptism Margaret and her family were living in Stonepark. In this transcription her mother Honora’s maiden name is Lysaght: https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FBAP%2F0491971

A copy of the original baptism for Margaret is can be accessed at the following link: https://tinyurl.com/2p9umftv

You’ll see Margaret and her father recorded as, “Margaret of John Carrol Lab.” Lab is the abbreviation for “Labourer.”

Margaret’s godparents are Thos. (Thomas) McMahon and Margaret Carrol. Margaret is likely John Carrol’s sister.

    THE FIRST-BORN ELLEN CARROL’S BAPTISM

Ellen was baptized on 26 March 1836, according to the FMP transcription, which also shows the Carrol family were living in Stonepark: https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FBAP%2F0492229

A copy of the original baptism record from the National Library of Ireland for Ellen, shows her godparents were John Kelly and Cath. McNamara. See a copy of the original baptism record at: https://tinyurl.com/juct3wjj

    BAPTISM OF MICHAEL CARROL

Michael and his parents were living in Stonepark when he was baptized on 15 October 1841. See the FMP transcription: https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FBAP%2F0492749

The original baptism record shows that Michael’s godparents are George Peacock and Honora Considine: https://tinyurl.com/3xerk4av

    SECOND-BORN ELLEN CARROL’S BAPTISM

    Ellen was born on 1 April 1845 according to the FMP transcription. The residence of Ellen and her family at the time of the baptism is Stonepark;
    https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FBAP%2F0493081

A copy of the original baptism record for Ellen shows that her godfather was Michael, whose last name looks like “Sixpence.” The first name of the godmother is Mary, but I couldn’t tell with any certainty what her last name was: https://tinyurl.com/5n7scwkn

Ellen’s birth in 1845 means she was born during the first year of the Great Famine, known in the Irish language as “an Gorta Mór.” More information about the famine can be found in the Wikipedia article:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Famine_(Ireland)

THE MARRIAGE OF JOHN CARROL AND NORRY LYSAGHT

Based on your information that John and Honora were married on 18 February 1830, I found their FMP marriage transcription as well as copy of their original Ballybricken and Bohermore Catholic Parish marriage record.

The FMP transcription shows that Honora Lysaght’s first name was recorded as the nickname, Norry. Both John and Norry were living in Stonepark at the time of the marriage:
    https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FMAR%2F0093665%2F1

A copy of the original marriage record from the National Library of Irelandshows there were three witnesses to the marriage. They are Wm. Lysaght, Thos. McMahon, and Mich. Lysaght. Just to the right and a little below Michael Lysaght’s name, you’ll see the numbers 1.2.6. This means that John and Norry made a donation to the church of 1 Pound, 2 Shillings, and 6 Pence. The name of the priest who married John and Honora was the Rev. Philip Cleary: https://tinyurl.com/yc5s9955

    GRIFFITHS VALUATION

I next looked for John or Honora Carrol in an Irish property tax record known as Griffiths Valuation. I wanted to see if either had been recorded living in the townland of Stonepark, which was located in the Civil Parish of Ludden.

Griffiths Valuation was enumerated in the 32 counties of Ireland between 1847 and 1864. The valuation for townlands within the Civil Parish of Ludden, including Stonepark, was completed by October of 1851. October was the printing date for the valuation.

Unlike a census, Griffiths Valuation did not enumerate individual members of a family, such as husband, wife, and children in a household residence. Those named in the valuation were individuals who paid to lease property, such as land, houses, and outbuildings. Each person who paid to lease the property was called an “Occupier.” The other person listed in Griffiths Valuation was the person who owned the property, or who worked as the middleman collecting the rent for the owner. This middleman was called the “Immediate Lessor.”

You can search Griffiths Valuation for free at the Ask About Ireland website link at:
    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

I found John Carrol in Griffiths Valuation, map number 7a, leasing a house and land from an Immediate Lessor named Richard Rice. See: https://tinyurl.com/yaw4xah4

Griffiths Valuation shows that John Carrol leased 1 Acre, 2 Roods, and 11 Perches of land valued at 1 Pound and 3 Shillings. His house was valued at 12 Shillings. The total valuation for John’s lease is 1 Pound and 15 Shillings. He would not have been required to pay a tax on this lease. Paying taxes on properties valued under 5 Pounds was the responsibility of the property owner. In this case, John Croker, at map reference 9, may have been the owner, with Richard Rice being the middle man who collected the rent for John Croker.

For information about acres, roods, and perches, go to the logista.com website link at: https://lochista.com/understanding-acres-perches/

Griffiths Valuation also shows that John Carrol is the Immediate Lessor for John William’s lease of a house at map reference 7b.

Griffiths Valuation for Stonepark at map reference 5a, shows that William Lysaght leased a house, offices, and land from Richard Rice.

William leased 27 Acres, 2 Roods, and 34 Perches of land valued at 20 Pounds. His house and offices were valued at 2 Pounds and 10 Shillings. The total valuation for William’s lease was 22 Pounds and 10 Shillings. He would have been required to pay a percentage of this value toward the tax.

A house in Griffiths Valuation could refer to a barn, stable, blacksmith shop, piggery, etc.

You’ll also see that William Lysaght is the Immediate Lessor for property held by Patrick Noonan at map reference 6a.

William Lysaght may have been related to Honora Lysaght Carrol.

The following is a Griffiths Valuation Map for Stonepark. Toward the lower left is map reference 7a, where John Carrol leased his house and land. https://tinyurl.com/ypv4fuw9

The upper portion of the map, left of center, is map reference 5. This is the area where William Lysaght leased his house, offices, and land.

THE BALLYBRICKEN AND BOHERMORE PARISH REGISTERS

I next wanted to see how far back in time the Ballybricken and Bohermore Catholic Parish registers of baptism and marriage are available at the National Library of Ireland.

The website shows baptisms begin on 9 November 1800 and are available up to 20 January 1881, though there are some gaps in the coverage of the baptism registers.

Marriage are available beginning on 10 August 1805 and can be accessed from the National Library of Ireland up to 24 January 1883. There are also gaps in the marriage registers.

To see the parish registers availability for yourself, and to view a map of the Catholic Parish of Ballybricken and Bohermore, along with the surrounding Catholic parishes, go to: https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0242

Knowing that John Carrol and Honora Lysaght were married in 1830, and the Ballybricken and Bohermore baptisms go back to 1800, I suspected there may be baptism records for John and Honora in the parish if they were born between 1800 and 1812.

But, without knowing the names of their parents, any records I found would be circumstantial evidence, rather than direct evidence that they are in your line. I began the search for John Carrol’s baptism at the FMP website.

    JOHN CARROLL’S BAPTISM

I located an FMP baptism transcription that may pertain to your John Carrol. John was baptized on 12 April 1806. His parents are Jno (John) Carroll and Mary Conway. John and his parents were living in the townland of Ludden at the time of the baptism. Ludden was also the name of the civil parish for several townlands in this area of County Limerick:
    https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FBAP%2F0489768

The next link takes you to a copy of the original baptism record for John Carroll from the National Library of Ireland. Because of the handwriting, I didn’t want to take a guess as to the names of the godparents: https://tinyurl.com/ma66kdda

    HONOR LYCET’S BAPTISM

Honor was baptized on 6 May 1805 according to the FMP transcription. Her parents are Wm Lyset and Mary Carrol. The residence of the family at the time of the baptism was Bohermore:
    https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FBAP%2F0489722

The copy of the original baptism record shows that the first name of Honor’s godfather is “Ml,” for Michael. His last name looks like it could be Bray. The godmother is Catherine Sixpence: https://tinyurl.com/35e8mmhb

To the right of Mary Carroll’s name is the name of the town where Honor and her family were living at the time of the baptism. The name of the town is covered by a dark spot. When I enlarged the baptism record, I found the town of residence for Honor and her parents was not Bohermore, but Rochestown.

The following is a Google Map of Stonepark and Rochestown. The map also shows the locations of Luddenbeg and Luddenmore. The baptism record for Honor Lycet does not specify if she and her family were living in Luddenbeg or Luddenmore at the time of the baptism in 1805:

Here is a Google Street View just outside of Rochestown: https://tinyurl.com/3us2bmxw

This narrow gravel road in the Google Street View of Luddenbeg is called a “boreen.” https://tinyurl.com/yckpu42w

The road in this Google Street View is just west of Stonepark: https://tinyurl.com/mr27h7hh

    PATRICK CARROLL’S DEATH RECORD

Your information shows that Patrick Carroll died on 19 May 1924. I uncovered a copy of Patrick’s original death record at the Ancestry.com subscription website, showing he actually died on 19 May 1921 at his residence of 4834 Union Ave., Chicago, Illinois. His age at death is recorded as 72 years, 2 months, and 11 days. The death record also shows he was married when he died. His wife’s first name is Mary.

His year of death, 1921, means he would have been 83 when he died instead of 86, as noted earlier in this reply.

Patrick died of “Carcinoma of bladder.” His physician was John E. Berry.

Patrick’s occupation had been, “Laborer City of Chicago.” His birthplace was Ireland. His parents were John Carroll and Honor. Honor’s last name looks like Liced or perhaps Licet. Both parents were born in Ireland. The person who was the informant was John Carroll of 4834 Union Ave., Chicago. I suspect John Carrol was Patrick’s son.

Patrick Carroll was buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery on May 23, 1921. The undertaker was P. Brady: https://tinyurl.com/yep3hbkf

Going to the Find A Grave website for the St. Olivet Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois, I found the submissions for Patrick Carroll and his wife, Elizabeth (Mary) Carroll. Elizabeth was born in Ireland in1862 and died in 1927. But, a photo of Patrick and Elizabeth’s gravestone places her year of birth in 1860, rather than 1862.

See the Find A Grave submissions for Patrick and Elizabeth at the following links:
