Olivia Knight was born in Castlebar, County Mayo, on the 28th of November 1829.
Knight began her career as a teacher, but it is as a writer that she would earn her greatest acclaim. She began writing for The Nation in 1848 under the pseudonym, Thomasine. She wrote stories and poems, as well as translating works from French. She continued to publish in this fashion until 1860 when she emigrated to Australia after the death of her mother.
On her way to her new life in Australia, Knight met a journalist named Hope Connolly. She would go on to marry him and settle down in Queensland.
