Arthur Colahan was born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, on the 12th of August 1884. When he was a young man, his family relocated to Galway city where he attended the Bish school. He later attended a boarding school in Limerick.
He went to Dublin to obtain and Arts degree from University College Dublin. He then returned to Galway where he studied medicine, graduating as a doctor in 1913.
He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and wa stationed in India where he was badle affected by mustard gas. After the war ended he left the military and settled in Leicester where he specialised in neurology.
Yet aside from his great academic and military achievements, Colahan was also an accomplished musical composer. He penned some of Ireland's most famous airs, including 'The Kylemore Pass', 'The Claddagh Ring', and most famously, 'Galway Bay' which he composed in 1927 in memory of his brother Randolph who drowned in the Bay.
Colahan died on the 15th of September 1952 and is buried in Bohermore Cemetery, Galway city. st nic
