John Clancy was the son of Daniel Clancy and Catherine Molony. He was born between August and September 1832. Godparents were Lot Molony of Ballyknevin and Margaret Molony of Kilrohill.
He migrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia between 1851 and 1861.

John’s occupation is listed variously as labourer at his marriage, carter at the birth of Daniel and contractor from 1866 to the end of his life.
Bridget died from congestion of the lungs on 27 November 1882 and was buried in the Melbourne cemetery (Victoria, Registrar of Deaths and Marriage, Death Certificate of Bridget Clancy, 11645/1882). None of her children had yet married and her youngest was only two years old.
John seems to have been a shrewd investor in property in South and Port Melbourne. He owned his own house from 1864 and over the years purchased several houses to rent. (See South Melbourne and Port Melbourne Rates Books on Ancestry).
John died on 10 January 1890 and was buried with his wife Bridget and their infant son, Thomas, at the Melbourne cemetery (Victoria, Registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages, Death Certificate of John Clancy 3345/1890). He owned five houses as well as the family home. He also ran a successful contracting business operating three tip drays and seven horses.
He left his property and business to his family believing he had provided well for them. (Public Record Office Victoria, VPRS 7591/P2, Unit 174, item 44/859, VPRS 28/P2, 305, item 44/859 and VPRS 28/P0, unit 562, Item 44/859.)
Unfortunately, Victoria suffered a severe depression (1890–1893) and it was 1901 before the executor of his will advertised the auction of the real estate. (National Library of Australia, The Age (Melbourne, Vic., 1854 - 1954), 4 May 1901, p. 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article190040215)
