Back to List

William Arthur Birmingham was born in 1880, son of John Birmingham of Dublin and grandson of Michael Blake Birmingham, R.M., of Dalgin, Tuam, County Galway.

In 1909, he married Margery Randall Pyke in Belfast. Marjorie was born in Belfast in 1888.

In the 1911 Census, William and his wife, Margery, were residents of a house 14 in Bawnmore Road (Windsor Ward, County Antrim). William was employed as a Commercial Clerk and he and his wife had no children.

By 1914, William had moved to live in Dublin. He was employed as an Accountant at St James's Gate Brewery, owned by the Guiness family.

William Birmingham was working in Guinness's Brewery when the war broke out and he promptly volunteered for active service, although a married man. He became a Second Lieutenant with the Royal Irish Fusiliers Unit 6th Battalion. Sadly, he was killed in action at the Dardenelles. He was never to return to Ireland and was buried at the Helles Memorial Cemetery in Turkey.

His widow, Margery, remarried in England in 1916 to Caesar Frank Cooke.
