My great grandfather Bernard Heslin immigrated from Ireland to the US circa 1870, Cannot find him in the 1870 census. Found a naturalization, but not much in way of vital information.
His age seem to change with any record that I have found, I have 2 marriage records with a Catholic Church he was 28, The county license he was 30.
1880 Wheeling West Virginia he was 30. Can't find him in 1900, but his death record for Columbus, Ohio shows his birth as Dec. 1854 age 50. Newspaper entries are 50 or 60. Mary (his wife) is listed in the 1900 Columbus, Ohio census as the head of household, His occupation seemed to have been traveling salesman, so I think maybe he wasn't in a place to be counted.
In the catholic marriage record I assume his parents are Peter Heslin and Anne Dunn, as his wife's parent's were listed. Her father Timothy Lomasney gave consent for the license.
The Lomasney's moved (1886) to Trenton, New Jersey, Timothy died 6 months after moving, and his wife Ellen died in 1909. My great grandparents went to Columbus, Ohio. My grandfather was born in Columbus 1885/6. From his railroad pension record I found the middle name of his father being Doyle.
Family oral history indicates that Bernard may be related to Father Patrick Heslin who was murdered in 1920 San Francisco, California, Father Patrick was a brother of Bishop Thomas Heslin of Natchez, Mississippi and a Father John of New Orleans. I have done alot of research on this family, who seems to hail from Dernacross, County Longford area. From using newspapers in the San Francisco area and a cemetery I have gather some what of a family tree for a Hughes family probably related to his mother's side. Another Heslin that moved to California claimed to be a nephew of Father Patrick and married into a House family.
All I have had was a relative saying that she remember the relationship being something on the first level, like brother, cousin, uncle or nephew. She was a cousin of my father and in her early twenties when the murder occurred, so between then and when I asked her was about 55 years, she had no written record.
I have not been sucessful in locating a Peter with wife Anne Dunn, did find an entry in a Leitrim parish register for Charles and Peter Heslin parents Peter Heslin and Anne Rodahan. Charles and Peter moved to Massachusetts.
