Stayed in Ireland

Lucy Elliott, daughter of William Elliott and Mary Moore, was born into the Church of Ireland in Derryhoo, in Drumlane parish, in Cavan, in Ireland, in about 1844.

Her siblings were Thomas, born about 1824; Mary Jane, born about 1833; Robert, born about 1834; Elizabeth, born about 1839; Letitia, born about 1841; Rosanna, born about 1844; John, born about 1845. There must have been several more children between Thomas and Mary Jane but, so far, I have found no details for them. Thomas, Mary Jane, Robert, Letitia and John all emigrated to New Zealand, Elizabeth and Rosanna to the United States.

Lucy remained in Ireland and married William Gregg in 1871 in the St Columbus Parish Church in Drumlane.

They had nine children: Alice Gregg in 1872, Letitia Maria Gregg in 1873, Georgina Gregg in 1873, John Gregg in 1876, Elizabeth Gregg in 1878, William Gregg in 1880, Isabella Gregg in 1882, John Gregg in 1884, and Robert Gregg in 1886.

William and Lucy lived in Derryhoo and are found in the 1901 census. At this date they have three sons and two daughters at home: Georgina (age 26), William (age 20), Isabella (age 19), John (age 17) and Robert (age 15). - "Census of Ireland" (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/)

Elizabeth (Lizzie) was working as a kitchen maid in a Quaker household at 6 Belsize Road (Lisburn, Antrim). Lizzie is 22 and her place of birth is spelt Derihoo, Co. Cavan. It must have been quite a prosperous household as there were four other servants, a domestic, a cook and two housemaids. The house had 19 rooms.

Lucy’s husband, William Gregg, died in 1909. Lucy is recorded in the Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1858 – 1920 as Lucindia. This is the first time I have met this variation on her name.

In the 1911 census Lucy (age 66) was still living in Derryhoo. Georgina (age 37), Lizzie (age 32), Robert (age 2) and Isabella Macauley (granddaughter, age 6) are listed with her. - "Census of Ireland" (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/)

Lucy lived on till 1929. Both Lucy and William are buried in St. Columbas Parish Church in Drumlane. The headstone is for a family plot with quite a lot of information on it. - (Find a grave memorial ID 134820000)
